Sumter County Schools

The Sumter County School District continues to look for ways to provide a great education for its students and the community. Four years ago Sumter County School established four academies in each elementary school: Cherokee - Core Knowledge Academy; Sumter County Primary - Fine Arts Academy; Sarah Cobb Real World Academy; and Sumter County Elementary - Math, Science, and Technology Academy. These academies offer excellent learning opportunities for children in Pre-K - 5th grade.

Sumter County Schools (SCS) has two middle schools which offer excellent learning opportunities for children in grades 6-8.

SCS has its own freshman academy. This environment makes it easier for students to transfer from middle to high school.

Americus-Sumter County High School recently completed a major renovation to its vocational program that offers state-of-the-art vocational classes in culinary arts, construction, auto repair, medical, agriculture and business education.

Sumter County Schools maintains a partnership with South Georgia Technical College that has students based there for college credit classes in vocational subjects.

Sumter County Schools System also has an early college program which is housed on the campus of our other partner, Georgia Southwestern State University. Early College allows students to receive college credit while attending high school.

Few school districts have the technology for students and staff found in Sumter County Schools. Ninety percent of our classrooms have interactive whiteboard devices with a projector and 100% internet connectivity throughout the district. There are 3,000 computers and laptops in Sumter County Schools.

Sumter County School District has a great athletic tradition. The athletic department offers great opportunities for our student athletes in most sports.

The Fine Arts program at the high school has one of the premier programs in this part of the state. The band and vocal music productions are widely acclaimed by all who see their performances at the Historic Rylander Theater. The Fine Arts Program wins awards at many annual competitions. The band visited Washington, D.C. for the recent Inauguration.

The district continues to strive for small class sizes and is particularly proud of our daily attendance rate of 96%.

Sumter County Schools has a highly dedicated teaching, support and administrative staff who may reside within the district.

We have high behavior standards for our students. We recently adopted a student dress code for all students to raise standards to a higher level.

With the passage of a recent SPLOST, all schools have received upgrades allowing us to have excellent facilities for our students. The Chamber of Commerce has partnered with our school district to provide our students and staff with additional mentors and support necessary to be a great school district.

We encourage new residents or perspective residents to visit our schools and see this educational excellence for themselves.
